A Sneak Peek at Carine Roitfeld’s CR Fashion Book
Carine Roitfeld is the 57-year-old former editor of French Vogue, and this year she debuts her highly-anticipated fashion bible, the CR Fashion Book. The book is scheduled to be printed twice per year and to appear live online with each printing, and industry experts are hotly anticipating its release.
Carine left French Vogue some two years ago, but says she never really stopped working. She collaborated with Barneys and Karl Lagerfeld and designed several fashion spreads in the interim. She is also the new face of MAC Cosmetics, and recently appeared in their campaign in black silk lingerie, a sure sign that she is nowhere near ready to settle down and fade into the background.
Because Carine also just became a grandmother for the first time, she felt it was appropriate to fill the magazine with “the promise of youth, the force of age, and the rush of all things new.” Two covers of the magazine fulfill that promise; one is of Kate Upton holding ducklings while another shows a little girl holding a baby. The magazine itself will be fresh and different and very unique; Carine promises to feature Amma, a Hindu spiritual leader, as well as Leslie Winer, a model from the 1980s, on the inside of future issues.
In an interview with the Daily Beast, Carine stated, “I think it’s better to turn the page of the magazine with a smile on your face. It’s a serious business, but at the end of the day, it’s just fashion.”
While the theme of the first Fashion Book is centered around babies and birth, Carine also said that it won’t necessarily be a recurring theme. “When I started to work on this issue, my daughter was pregnant, so I was obsessed with pregnancy, with babies, with new life coming,” she said. “The next one will be totally another world.”
As for her choice to use Kate Upton for the first cover, Carine explained, “I wanted someone with a sensual body, someone who could be a mother for all these babies… I would not say she’s a controversial model, but she’s not a classic model.”
When questioned about being called a “grandmother with sex appeal,” Carine told the interviewer, “Grandmother doesn’t mean that you have gray hair and you retire and stay home cooking cakes for your grandchildren. Now, a grandmother is young, and she’s still doing a lot of things.” Obviously Carine knows the subject all too well, as it seems she won’t be slowing down anytime soon no matter her age and no matter the grandchildren that come along in her life.
