Are Parents Role Models That Influence Kids Positively or Negatively?
Psychologists, psychiatrists, therapists and counselors would all agree the greatest influence in a child’s life is his or her parents. It is believed the same gender parent is particularly important to a child growing up.
A child is much more likely to do as a parent does rather than do as a parent says. It is a parent’s actions that speak far more loudly than words.
Children do model their own behavior on their parents’ behavior. Time and time again it has been proven that children with badly behaved parents do end up behaving badly or even worse. Even more distressing they bring up their own children in the same negative way.
Of course, there are children who turn out better than their parents because they make a conscious effort to be better. However, this happens much less frequently than the other way round.
The same goes for children of well behaved parents. They usually become well behaved adults and parents to their own children.
Being a role model could have a negative or positive affect on the character of children. Fortunately, parents don’t have to be perfect. What is required of parents is stability, consistence and fairness to children and others.
It is the whole rather than the exception that will prove to have the greatest effect on your child.
