Are Sequins Still in Style?
Sequins were very fashionable in the 1980s when everything about fashion was bigger, brighter, and louder. Sequins of every color added all the glitz and glamour needed for evening gowns and special outfits, and they soon made their way into everyday wardrobe pieces, even showing up on jeans and tees. While sequins are very eye-catching and can add all the glitz and shine needed for any wardrobe item, since they were in style in the 1980s it’s good to consider if they’re still a fashionable choice today. Clothes this decade are typically more scaled down and not quite as bold and daring as what was fashionable in the 1980s, but this doesn’t necessarily mean that all sequins are poor fashion choices.
Sequins have never quite gone out of style even today, as they’re often used on blouses and dresses to add that extra shine. However, what you wear and how many sequins you wear at once can determine if they’re the best choice. A dress made up entirely of sequins may be too much except for your dressiest of events. If you do wear a sequined dress, it’s probably better to opt for something shorter with no sleeves or just cap sleeves. A long sequined dress with high neck and long sleeves is very reminiscent of the 1980s and may look outdated and even matronly.
A sequined blouse can be a great choice if you pair it with the right skirt or trousers. A sleeveless, loose tank style blouse in sequins with a black pencil skirt can be a good choice for going from day to night, or you might pair that blouse with black jeans or black leather pants for some time at the nightclub.
You might also have fun with sequined pieces in your wardrobe if you don’t overdo it. A sequined band or tube top is a great choice for wearing with black trousers and a matching black jacket and can be very sexy. A sequined miniskirt with a loose blouse or fitted tee is a great choice as well, especially with chunky sandals or even black tights.
Sequins in your accessories can also work for you if you choose the right piece in the right size. A sequined evening bag is a fun touch for when you go out, or you might choose delicate sandals with sequins in the straps. Sequined pumps can also be a good choice with any trousers or skirt and they can add that extra bling your wardrobe needs.
Use sequins sparingly and don’t hesitate to remove an item from your ensemble if it seems like it has too many sequins or is too loud. You want a bit of flash for your outfit but don’t want to look outdated!
