Are There Foods That Speed Up Your Metabolism?
Wouldn’t it be nice if we could lose weight by eating? Unfortunately that just isn’t the case, but there are foods that are better choices when it comes to burning calories, building muscle, and losing weight. Before you choose the best foods for your own weight loss and fitness goals, first understand what is meant by metabolism and how foods affect your weight loss goals.
Your metabolism is the number of calories you burn every day on average. If you have a slow or low metabolism, you’re not burning many calories in any given day. A high or fast metabolism means you burn lots of calories throughout the day.
There are a few ways to raise your metabolism. Being physically active raises your metabolism because you’re burning calories while you’re active, and then also after you stop being active because your body works to repair and restore itself from any activity you perform. When you’re active and use your muscles, they suffer tiny tears that are then restored by the body during rest. Because the body is working to restore itself, you’re still burning calories even after you’ve been active. Having more muscle tone raises metabolism because the body works hard to feed muscle throughout the day. A person with more muscle tone will have a higher metabolism than someone with lots of body fat even if they have the same activity levels.
While there are no foods that are so difficult to digest that they actually raise your metabolism, there are foods that support a healthy metabolism and weight loss plan. Lean protein is one of the best foods you can choose for a healthy metabolism because it is less calorie-dense than other foods and because protein feeds muscle. Choices for lean protein include lean cuts of pork or chicken and fish. Dark leafy greens also have a high protein content; this would include spinach, kale, romaine lettuce, and collard greens.
Hot foods can also support a healthy metabolism because they make the heart race faster and cause the body to sweat to cool it down. Peppers, onions, garlic, and foods like these can help support a healthy metabolism and immune system. Adding cayenne pepper to lemon juice and water is a good detoxification drink as your body will start to sweat and get rid of unhealthy bacteria through the sweat glands.
Citrus fruits also contain a high number of vitamins and trace minerals that help to support a healthy metabolism. They are also full of hydration which you need to keep your muscles and organs healthy, which in turn keeps you active. These foods won’t burn calories for you but they can better support your efforts at being active and raising your metabolism.
