Best Places to Spend Christmas: Edinburgh (Scotland)
Edinburgh has consistently been ranked as one of the best ‘big city’ Christmas destinations in the United Kingdom. The party kicks off in late November with the Christmas Lights Switch (also known as Light Night) when streets, shops and trees are lit up to let everyone know Christmas is round the corner.
From Light Night, the Christmas festivities run for the next 6 weeks winding up with the 4-day New Year (Hogmanay) celebrations. Most of the action is on or close to Princes Street and the Princes Street Gardens.
There is a lot to do – skating on the city’s renowned outdoor ice rink (largest in Europe), riding in the Edinburgh Ferris Wheel or visiting the German-themed Christmas Market. You can also catch the city’s version of the Santa Run – an unusually huge gathering of Santas in one location.
If you are looking for a little more speed than the city’s Ferris Wheel delivers, make your way to the Christmas Fair for the thrilling Flying Carousel. The Christmas Fair also has a Children’s Christmas Corner with fun activities for children of all ages. Edinburgh has a special Santa post box at the Highland Market where the kids can drop off their letters to Santa before 24thDecember.
Apart from the Christmas-focused events, you can make time to see some of Edinburgh’s all-year attractions such as the architectural masterpiece that is the Scottish Parliament or a climb to Scotland’s highest hill – Arthur’s Seat.
