Best Places to Spend Christmas: Florida
Think Florida and it is more likely that the first thing that comes to your mind is a summer holiday as opposed to a Christmas vacation. The state’s swaying palms and balmy breezes would in many ways be inconsistent with the ice and snow that characterizes Christmas in the upper states of the United States.
The residents of Florida have over time defined their own distinct ways of celebrating Yuletide. Probably the best known Christmas-related tradition in Florida and one that draws throngs of eager visitors each year is the small town of Fort Christmas about 20 miles from downtown Orlando. The post office at Fort Christmas sees a surge of activity from the beginning of December as people from miles away patiently wait in line to get Christmas cards stamped and postmarked ‘Christmas, Florida’. The queue seems to grow every year.
Other than Fort Christmas, some of Florida’s best known recreational locations carry out extensive decoration consistent with the Christmas theme. None does this more dramatically than the world famous Walt Disney World Resort. The 40 square mile fun park is spectacular in December providing an unforgettable experience for the kids. Apart from the decoration, the seasonal music and especially the Candlelight Processional are some of the most awaited events in Disney World during Christmas.
SeaWorld Orlando too has a special Christmas holiday theme that includes the popular Polar Express Experience. Gaylord Palms resort’s Christmas treat is the man-made, hand carved ICE winter wonderland featuring gigantic ice sculptures and monuments.
