Black Rimmed Specs
There was a time when wearing specs was a nightmare and especially for girls. Spectacles were just plain ugly. They all looked exactly the same and their purpose seemed to be to make girls look as unattractive as possible.
Then there was a rise in the use of contact lenses. They were finicky to use because they had to be taken out for certain activities and sleeping. They also had to be kept hygienic in a special solution. However, girls were prepared to go through anything to avoid wearing ugly specs. Contact lenses kept on improving and today, we use disposable lenses – easy – quick – hygienic.
To add more confusion to the mix, girls today, want to wear specs.
There is a very good reason why we are clamoring to wear specs. They have become a must-have fashion accessory. For goodness sake, even girls who don’t need specs are wearing them – just for the effect. Confusing but fashion takes on a life of its own.
Nowadays, specs are super lightweight and come in all sizes, shapes, forms and colors. They can be plain or embellished with bling. Right now, the most popular specs have dark rims – gasp – the one’s so hated by our mums and grandmothers because they were the opposite of hipster.
We want to wear them because they look nerdy. The intelligent nerd look is the new cool. It’s not only women who want this look but men are teaming longer hair styles with nerdy black rimmed spectacles.
We are making a statement with dark rimmed specs. We want to look bookish, intelligent and creative. This is probably because there seems to be a sudden surge in the world’s creativity and we want to look part of it.
Even celebrities want to look clever by wearing dark rimmed specs like ‘Snooki’ Polizzi, Annette Bening, Rachael Harris and Lisa Kennedy Montgomery.
