Chocolate Bars: Which Ones Are the Worst?
When you are dieting, it can be fun to give yourself a weekly reward of a great chocolate bar. Some chocolate bars are absolute diet destroyers because they are so full of calories. When you decide to choose a chocolate bar as a reward or to satisfy a craving, you should only choose the ones that are great tasting and full of natural chocolate.
Some of the worst choices in chocolate bars are the ones that have more corn syrup or non-chocolate ingredients. Bad chocolate bars are also the ones that contain transfat or hydrogenated fat, which is an artificially produced fat that can increase the risk of heart disease. These are some of chocolate bars which contain transfat:
- Hershey’s Almond Joy
- Hershey’s Fast Break
- Hershey’s Take Five
- Mars Snickers
- Mars Caramel Twix
- Mars Three Musketeers
- Mars Milky Way
- Nestle Baby Ruth
It is important to remember that candy bars are never really “good for you.” They are candy bars, but if you are going to choose one, it is best to choose a chocolate bar that has natural ingredients that offer the real benefits of chocolate. There are actual benefits of eating chocolate, but when it is diluted with excess sugar, fats, and other additives, the goodness of the super food is reduced.
Chocolate Super Food
Chocolate, or cocoa or cacao, is a superfood that has been eaten for centuries. Only recently, researchers have identified the base ingredients in natural chocolate that have made it so healthy. In its base form of cacao, chocolate is a true antioxidant and one of the most powerful ones on the planet. However, in the industrialized nations we have added so much to cacao to make it sweet that we have destroyed the antioxidant properties.
The Darker the Better
The darker the chocolate and the purer the chocolate, the healthier it is. So, when you look for a “healthy” chocolate bar, try to find one with a high dark chocolate number and very few ingredients. Dark chocolate is quite bitter, so it is ok to have one with a sweetener, but make sure it is an natural sweetener, like agave.
Read the Ingredients
If you are turning to chocolate for the antioxidant properties, avoid white chocolate. This is not chocolate at all. It contains none of the antioxidant properties and more fat than milk chocolate or dark chocolate.
Many chocolate bars are very waxy in texture and to many people it feels like eating a candle. Some of the waxiest chocolate bars include Turkish Delight and Caramac. While you are avoiding waxy chocolate bars, it is also a good idea to avoid the gigantic King Size candy bars, too.
Many major candy manufacturers also add preservatives to their chocolate bars so they will last for a long time on the grocery store shelves. These candy bars are bad because of the preservatives and extremely large amount of fats:
- Hershey’s Cookies and Cream
- Milky Way
- Oh! Henry
One of the best places to find a great chocolate bar is your local health food store. They sell real, dark chocolate that is meant to have a short shelf life. You can also visit a local chocolatier who can make you a delicious chocolate bar while you wait.
