Elliptical Machines or Jogging Which is Better?
You have any number of choices today when it comes to the machines you can use at the gym or at home in order to stay active and lose weight, and of course you can still choose good old-fashioned walking or jogging outside. Understanding which is better for you and your fitness goals will mean making the best choice for a safe and effective workout.
One benefit of elliptical machines and skiing machines is that they have very little if any impact on the joints. This is very good for those with joint problems or who are very overweight, as pounding the pavement with jogging can mean tearing ligaments and tendons around the knees, ankles and hips, and causing pain and damage. When you’re overweight, you’re putting more pressure on these areas already so choosing a machine that moves in a circular motion rather than a pounding motion will mean protecting yourself.
On the other hand, elliptical machines and skiing machines often don’t get your heart rate going enough that you’re burning a healthy number of calories. Because your legs are just going in a circle and not actually being lifted off the ground, you’re expending much less energy and so aren’t getting as good of a workout.
The best machine for you will depend upon your goals and your overall condition. If you’re overweight, it’s best to stick to elliptical machines to keep from putting pressure on your joints, at least while you’re working to lose weight. If you’re at a healthy weight, jogging may not be an issue if you have good shoes with thick soles that cushion your steps.
You might also mix up your routine for the best results. Use the elliptical for half an hour, then jog for half an hour. This will ensure you get in an effective yet safe workout.
