Enjoying ’101 Dalmatians’ All Over Again
The 1996 film ’101 Dalmatians,’ a live action movie based on the animated film of the same name, was an instant classic the moment it was released. In the movie, veteran actress Glenn Close plays Cruella de Vil, who schemes to steal a litter of Dalmatian puppies in order to take their fur for a coat. She is joined by her two evil henchmen and thwarted in her efforts by 101 real Dalmatian puppies.
The movie was based on an animated film released in 1961, although in the live action film all the puppies were real and none of the dogs talked. Both stories tell the tale of two Dalmatian, Perdy and Pongo, who are united when their owners, Roger and Anita, fall in love and get married. The dogs have a litter of 15 puppies and Anita’s boss, Cruella, gets the idea of buying the puppies so she can take their fur for a coat. When Anita and Roger refuse to sell her the puppies, Cruella flies into a rage and decides to steal them with the help of her two bumbling henchmen, Jasper and Horace. Her attempts are thwarted by stray pups from the city who attack her on the farm where they are staying, and she is eventually arrested, while Roger designs a video game based on their adventures and has much financial success. The family adopts all the stray pups, bringing the number of Dalmatians on their farm to 101.
A film the entire family can love, the movie is generally harmless with few sequences that may prove overwhelming for young children. Unlike other live action films, it does not rely too much on putting the dogs in peril and the character of Cruella is so over-the-top that she is not likely to be overwhelming for children. They may appreciate seeing her get her comeuppance as she continually tries to trap the pups, who outsmart her at every turn.
Finding new movies to watch with your children and the whole family can be a challenge since only so many new movies are released every year. Choosing classics from some years back can give you a chance to enjoy them all over again, or to experience them with your children. Younger children who did not see the movie in the cinema may appreciate seeing it on video, and older children may enjoy revisiting the story after so many years. ’101 Dalmatians’ is modern enough for them to enjoy without feeling outdated or campy, and it is a great choice for the entire family.
Check out ’101 Dalmatians’ this year with your family. It may become a new classic that everyone loves and a great way to enjoy your time stuck indoors during the long winter.
