Everything You Need to Know About the Coil
The coil has been a very popular form of contraception in the 21st century. It is commonly referred to as an Intrauterine Device (IUD). However, while they are popular in Britain, they are not known to be common in some parts of the world. The USA for example carries out very few coil procedures. This is down to the bad reputation of a previous coil known as Dalkon Shield.
While this has long been off the market, women still remember just how bad it used to be. These days the coil is a safe and effective contraceptive procedure. Many people get IUD and IUS mixed up. The IUS devices contain hormones which are released into the body. IUD devices don’t.
How the Coil Works
It was discovered in the 20th century that if an object was placed inside the womb, it would prevent pregnancy. It wasn’t until roughly 40 years ago that it was also found that if a strip of copper wire was attached to this object, it would work much better. That is why most types of coil these days will include copper wire.
The only thing to keep in mind is that this isn’t a good solution for women who suffer with heavy periods. However, it can be a good option for any other woman who has already had children. The main reason why you should have already had children before having the coil is because they can be difficult to fit if you haven’t. If you are young and sexually active then you should also be screened beforehand to check that you donít have an STD before you have the coil fitted.
The coil itself is no longer than a matchstick. They tend to be T-Shaped and they can either be made with copper or plastic. They have threads attached to them which are there in case the doctor needs to take the coil out. These threads can be felt sometimes by your partner when you have intercourse. However, it shouldn’t cause much of a problem.
The coil is thought to be around 98% effective. If you do become pregnant after you have had the coil then there is a chance that you could suffer an ectopic pregnancy. This is one thing that you should be aware of. Always look into the advantages and disadvantages of the coil before deciding whether it is right for you.
