Fashion Giant H&M Launches Global Recycling Initiative in 2013
The fashion retailer H&M is launching a global recycling initiative in their retail stores next year. Starting February of 2013, customers may bring in articles of clothing for their program and receive a shopping discount in exchange. H&M is all about sustainability and preserving the ecosystem as much as possible and they see this program as a way to encourage customers to get involved.
To announce the program, H&M CEO Karl-Johan Persson said in a press release, “Our sustainability efforts are rooted in a dedication to social and environmental responsibility. We want to do good for the environment, which is why we are now offering our customers a convenient solution: to be able to leave their worn out or defective garments with H&M.”
The reason for this recycling program is simple; each year, tons of clothing wind up in landfills when some 95% of them could be used again or harvested for their materials to make new clothes. Recycling these garments for harvesting not just keeps them out of landfills but it also cuts down on the new materials needed to be harvested for manufacturing. H&M is making it their mission to cut down on this waste and the damage done to the environment through overharvesting of raw materials by bringing in this technical and practical solution to their stores.
The program does not discriminate; any article of clothing from any brand and which is made with any material, in any condition, is eligible for recycling and for a shopping voucher. Customers are rewarded by the bag so they may bring in as many as they wish.
Using the H&M recycling program is a great way for customers to clean out their closets and make room for new clothes. Often women are hesitant to clean out clothes from their closet because they don’t want to just simply throw them away. By recycling them you know they won’t wind up in a landfill. It’s also a good way to help cut down on the harvesting of new materials for clothes; this saves the environment at least in a small way. By recycling you also get a shopping voucher for new purchases which helps you to save! You can afford more items to get the pieces you need while staying within your budget.
The store has not yet revealed all the details of the recycling program but if you’re ready to clean out last year’s clothes and make room in your closet for new items, it can be a perfect choice for you. Get your bags ready for February and head off to H&M to help save the environment and get your discount on something new!
