Movie goers love gangsters and many are predicting that Gangster Squad, which was directed by Ruben Fleischer and written by Will Beall, will be another hit film that will make gangster-movie fans very happy.
The movie is set in Los Angeles in the 1940s and 1950s. The main characters are L.A.P.D. detectives working to get the gangsters out of the City of Angels. This was one of a few films that were affected by the shooting that took place in Aurora, Colorado during the opening night of the latest Batman film. There were a few scenes that were too close to what happened back then in Aurora, Colorado, so they were redone to be sensitive to the tragedy that occurred that day.
The actor list in Gangster Squad reads like a who is who of the top actors in Hollywood right now. They include newer stars like Josh Brolin, Emma Stone, Ryan Gosling along with veteran actors Nick Nolte and Sean Penn. Giovanni Ribisi and Michael Pena are supporting actors in the film and these two only add to the acting power in this historical piece.
Sean Penn plays Mickey Cohen, an east coast gangster who is trying to make his way into the Los Angeles scene. Nick Nolte plays the gruff police chief. Brolin, Gosling, Ribisi, and Pena are all detectives working to keep Los Angeles free from the East Coast Mafia that is working very hard to infiltrate the city and get in on the action. The detectives have to look to their ethics and beliefs as police officers as many of them are required to break the law in order to retain law in sunny California.
Release Date and Buzz
The film has a release date in the United States of January 11. It was original scheduled to be released in September, but the Aurora, Colorado shooting pushed back the release date. The studio, Warner Brothers, decided that it would be best to make the changes to one scene in particular that was too close to the events in Aurora. In the scene, characters are in Grauman’s Chinese Theater and they use submachine guns to shoot at the viewers in the theater. The scene was a part of the trailer and that trailer was immediately removed from the Internet sites that were airing it following the tragedy.
Because of the delayed release date and the major changes that were done to the film, the buzz has been building as many people are excited to see the phenomenal actors portray cops and robbers in this film.
Not For Children
The film is rated R because of the violence and language. It is not recommended for children. The movie has talk of drugs, prostitutes and gun traffic. Many of the Los Angeles politicians and police officers are already in cahoots with Mickey Cohen and his ruthless gang members. Many people are too afraid of Cohen to break from his payroll, but a secret group of cops is dedicated to getting Cohen to go back to Brooklyn.
