GORE-TEX Versus Leather – Which is Better for Winter Weather?
GORE-TEX is a manmade material that was designed for skiers and those who spend serious time in the snow. It’s tough and durable and lightweight. Clothes made of GORE-TEX are a favorite choice for those who are serious about their outdoor winter sports. While the material may be tough and strong, it’s not always considered attractive, which is why some will turn to treated leather instead of GORE-TEX for their outerwear. Which is better for winter weather and how can you decide?
There is no right or wrong answer for everyone; you need to consider the amount of time you’ll spend outside during winter and your own overall needs. If you ski or snowboard or spend serious time in the snow during winter, GORE-TEX may be a better fabric as it’s waterproof and lightweight and very durable. It’s easy to clean; typically a quick wipe with a wet rag will remove dirt and mud or anything else, and many pieces made of GORE-TEX are machine washable so you can toss them in the laundry very easily. Treated leather may require dry cleaning and the use of a good brush and leather cleaner for it to actually be completely clean.
Often GORE-TEX moves more readily when used in a piece of outerwear. The lightweight material allows you to ski or snowboard or just walk more easily than a constrictive piece of leather. Even softer leather may still be constrictive and keep you from handling snow or from being active. If you like to run during winter, leather is not always the best choice even if it’s soft or treated leather.
Because GORE-TEX is not considered the most attractive of fabrics and is seen as functional rather than fashionable you may want to consider treated leather for wearing to the office or for when you go out. A three-quarter length jacket is good for all occasions and can work with jeans as well as a skirt or dress. When you shop for something new, choose a style that is classic and that will last for years. A square cut with two rows of buttons and a belt is always in style, or you might choose a raincoat style you can tie at the waist for a nice silhouette.
It may be good to have a few different pieces for winter; a nice GORE-TEX jacket and snow pants can be perfect for when you head out to the slopes but a nice treated leather jacket will keep you dry and warm when you head off to work. Choose based on your needs and invest in some good outerwear so you enjoy the winter months.
