Having a Coil Fitted: What You Need to Know
Once you have decided that the coil is for you, the doctor will help you to decide which type of coil would be best for you. There are different types of coils available and they all need to be fitted by a trained nurse or doctor. They can usually be fitted within your doctorís surgery or at the family planning clinic.
The entire procedure should take no more than 15-20 minutes. The doctor/nurse will need to open the vagina and keep it open with a clamp. This is the exact same procedure as when you have a smear test done. The coil can then easily be placed through the cervix into the womb.
This can be a painful procedure so the nurse/doctor may offer you painkillers to help with the pain. If you would prefer you could also ask for a local anaesthetic. This will help to numb the area and it will not be as uncomfortable. However, you should take into account that the injection itself can be painful so you are often in a no win situation! It is typically more painful for women who have not yet had children as the cervical won’t have stretched. Once the procedure has been done, it is likely that you will experience cramps.
As well as cramping, you could also suffer with bleeding that looks like your period for a few days afterwards. A coil can last in the body effectively for around 10 years. You will need regular check-ups to see that it is working and everything is ok. If you have had the coil fitted when you are 40 years of age or over, it is likely that it will last until the menopause.
It’s also worth keeping in mind that the coil is typically fitted while you are on your period. Once it has been fitted you will be protected against pregnancy. The great thing about a IUD is the fact that it can be taken out at any time. So if you do change your mind and you decide that you do want a family, it can easily be removed.
Remember, there are other simpler forms of contraception that you can sue which are just as effective as the coil. However, this form of contraception leaves you not having to worry which can therefore improve your sex life and strengthen the bond between you and your partner.
