How Adults With ADHD Can Help Themselves
Adults who have a diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or ADHD need to plan their days a little more than most. Due to the fact that some of the most debilitating day to day symptoms of the disorder is inability to concentrate fully and to tend to be disorganised and forgetful the ADHD individual needs to plan and to use coping strategies each and every day in order to function and to live to the best of their ability.
Getting plenty of exercise and concentrating on being good at a particular sport can be a good thing if you have ADHD. Depression and mood disorders can go hand in hand with the condition and when we exercise the brain releases good endorphins which alleviate these problems. Also exercise tires us out and this is no bad thing if we are feeling restless and irritable.
Following on from this it is important that the ADHD individual gets plenty of good quality sleep. If one tends to be an insomniac then exercise and if needed medication will be a great help. Without the correct amount of sleep we tend to feel out of sorts and get grumpy. This is a big no no for those who have ADHD.
Ensure that you eat well and enjoy a balanced and varied diet. This will allow your body to have the correct nutritional building blocks in order to make you feel as well and as healthy as possible.
Practically there are many great ways in which the ADHD individual can organise themselves. When there are things to do then make a list and set out timeframes for each activity so that they don’t over run. Ensure that these timeframes are achievable and give yourself more time than needed just in case. Set an alarm for when you wish to stop partaking in a particular activity and become a clock watcher. This will help. Learn how to say no and also how to prioritise effectively. Speak with those close to you and make them aware of how your condition works so that they can support and encourage you when you need it.
ADHD symptoms can be overcome with your doctor’s help. Self help methods have been tired and tested for many years too and it is surprising how much better the sufferer can feel when they put these into play.
