How Celebs Prepare for the Awards Season
he start of a new year means a new awards season for celebs. They can look forward to the Oscars, the BAFTA Awards and the Golden Globe Awards, and ceremonies that are a bit less prominent but still important such as the Screen Actors Guild or Directors Guild Awards. The awards themselves are coveted but a celebrity’s appearance on the red carpet or at an after-party is also very important, as this is their chance to mix and mingle with others in the industry and to get their pictures in the papers.
Some celebrities also see it as a good time to look their best; actors and actresses sometimes need to go through very unflattering makeovers for certain roles, such as Charlize Theron’s transformation for “Monster” in 2003 or Nicole Kidman’s change for “The Hours” in 2002. Walking the red carpet is a chance to once again look fabulous and stunning in front of their adoring fans.
If you assume that a celebrity starts to get ready for any awards ceremony that afternoon, you’re greatly mistaken! It often takes celebrities weeks if not months of preparation before they step foot on the red carpet, so they look their best and make the right impression with the crowd. This is especially true if they’ve been nominated for an award or will be onstage as a presenter.
Working out and getting into shape is their first concern, and this can take weeks or months. A celebrity may hire a personal trainer and a dietician to help them create a program designed to get them looking their best. They may hit the gym every day or six times a day, and follow a strict diet during the time.
Skin treatments are also important to start well before an awards ceremony. Celebrities are notoriously tight-lipped about what they go through to look their best, but it’s not unusual for them to schedule Botox injections or a chemical peel some four to six weeks before the first awards show. These procedures are not reserved for the women as the men will also go through them to remove a few wrinkles and other blemishes and look stunning on the red carpet. They may also get their teeth whitened and if necessary, capped.
A designer gown or fabulous tuxedo is also necessary to look their best, and many designers will start sending sketches and samples of work to certain celebrities the minute they know they’ll be at an awards show or after-party. The celeb needs to choose more than one gown in case something happens to their first choice, and go through various fittings and final adjustments in the weeks leading up to the ceremony.
They will also hire someone to handle their hair and makeup, and will have them go over their routine several times before the day of the ceremony so they can agree on just the right look. This is true for the men as well, since they may need to dye the grey out of their hair or leave in a few grey hairs for a mature look, and need to have just the right style for the big day.
All of these things take weeks to plan and prepare so they look their best when on the red carpet for each and every awards ceremony they attend.
