How Long Can You Store Frozen Food?
Freezing food is a good way to make it last for weeks if not months or longer. If you have a good freezer you can purchase meat and other items when they are on sale and store them, saving you money on your family budget. Freezing leftovers to use at another time also saves you money since the food does not go to waste. To freeze foods properly you need to know how long you can store foods in the freezer before they are ruined.
One thing to remember is that you always want to store foods properly when you put them in the freezer in order to protect them and to keep them longer. They should be wrapped in such a way that they cannot be exposed to air. Meat is best wrapped in tin foil and other foods should be in a sealed, airtight container. It is also good to get as much air out of the containers as possible before you store food away.
Once you have food wrapped properly, you can store them in the freezer typically for up to a year. Your only consideration is that the longer they store in the freezer, the more ice and frost they will have form around them. When you defrost foods, this extra frost will become water and may water down your foods. In many cases you can not always tell the difference but for foods stored where there is a lot of frost buildup, they may taste a bit dull after they thaw. If you have ever had a frozen pie or cake that seemed a bit bland or reheated frozen vegetables and they came out mushy, this is because of the extra frost and ice that form around them.
Some foods also are not good to freeze even for a short time. Typically foods that are high in water content do not freeze well because the water in the food will cause it to become mushy and even ruined. As water expands when it freezes, the water content in certain foods will push out against its other content, ruining it. This is why it is difficult to freeze many fruits and certain vegetables, as they are high in water content. Trying to freeze apples or oranges or foods like lettuce can be impossible. If you have soups or other dishes with these foods inside and you are trying to freeze the leftovers, they may not taste right when reheated no matter how long you freeze them.
When wrapped properly, foods like meat and beverages can typically freeze up to a year. Defrost them slowly so the water can drip away as it melts. This will help to preserve the flavor of your frozen foods.
