How to Apply Eyeliner
Eyeliner is a great way to accentuate your eyes and really make them stand out on your face. However, if it is not applied correctly you could be left with eyes that are small and appear to be sunken in. Following these simple steps will help you apply the eyeliner correctly and get the look that you desire.
Choose an Eyeliner Color
The first step in applying eyeliner is choosing the color that you want. You can go with the traditional black, brown or charcoal for a simple look, or you can choose a bold color like indigo or plum for a unique look that will make you stand out.
Choose a Type
There are a few types of eyeliners. The most common are pencil liners, but there are also liquid and gel liners. The pencil liners will give you a soft look that can easily be blended. While the liquid or gel liners will give you precision and will add a dramatic effect.
Prepare the Line
Before applying the liner, you want to make sure it is ready. If you are using a pencil liner you will want to sharpen it before use. If you are using a liquid liner, make sure that it is free of any clumps. Finally, if you are using a gel liner, make sure the brush is clean and the liner is free of clumps.
Depending on the look that you want, you need to use a different technique.
- Liquid liner
Use a steady hand and line the eye in one motion from the inner corner to the outer corner.
- Smokey eye
Use a pencil liner and apply a thick layer along the lid. Use a blending brush or your finger to smudge the liner into the eye.
A liquid liner is best. Apply as you would any liquid liner, but hold the outer edge of your eye taught with your hand. Extend the liner in an upward motion outside of the outer corner of the eye.
- Basic liner
Use a pencil liner and draw light dashes from the inner corner to the outer corner of the eye, making sure that you connect the dashes.
- Under eye
There are three different ways you can line the lower lid. You can fully line it, half line it or quarter line it. If you want to make your eyes appear larger, go for the quarter line. If you want a dramatic effect, go for the fully lined. The half lined will be an in-between look. Line the lower lid by starting at the outer corner where the upper lid liner left off and lightly sweep the liner along the lash line until you reach your desired spot.
- Apply the liner under your shadow for a softer look, but over shadow for a bolder look.
- Use a neutral color on top, such as black, and a bold color on bottom such as teal.
- You do not have to match your liner to your shadow.
- Experiment with the different techniques to find the one that suits your eyes best.
