How to Get Healthy Circulation in Your Legs and Feet
Your blood circulation is vitally important for every part of your body; it is through the blood that cells are nourished with the vitamins, minerals, and important amino acids they need to be strong and healthy and to restore and repair themselves. Blood also delivers needed oxygen which feeds cells and also works as a healing agent. As the blood travels through the body’s system, it also picks up dead cells and other impurities and removes them to the body’s filtering system, through the liver, lungs or kidneys.
The parts of the body that are the most distant from the heart, meaning the legs and feet, may suffer the most if you have poor blood circulation. The heart needs to push hard to get blood flowing throughout the extremities, and those who often have cold feet or numb toes may be suffering from poor circulation. This can also lead to leg cramps and muscle irritation in the legs as well as unsightly varicose veins or spider veins.
To get healthy circulation in the legs, you first need to consider your physical activity levels every day. The more you exercise, the stronger your circulation. When you sit at a desk for long periods every day, your circulation slows down and your legs and toes are affected. Get up and walk around every two hours; get yourself a cup of coffee, hand-deliver a note to a coworker, or just walk back and forth along a hallway for a few minutes when you have a break.
Sitting with your feet on the floor or standing can also slow down your circulation. The blood pools to the toes and feet and doesn’t circulate as it should. As much as possible, put your feet up and twist your feet around at the ankles if you stand all day. When you’re at your desk, pick up your feet, stretch your legs out in front of you, and twist your ankles around. Do this several times per day to keep the blood circulating.
Be sure you get plenty of regular exercise in order to strengthen your heart and your circulatory system. Walk after dinner or invest in a good elliptical machine so you can exercise every night. Aerobic activity and yoga help to increase circulation so you have strong and healthy legs and feet.
For those with serious problems with circulation, consider compression socks and hose. These add slight pressure to the legs and feet which in turn helps to move the blood along the circulatory system. These are often worn by diabetics as they typically suffer from circulatory problems, and they can keep your circulation healthy for hours every single day. If you sit for long periods of time or on your feet for your work, consider investing in some good compression hose for the safety and sake of your feet and legs.
