How to Outperform Your Male Colleagues in Your Career
Being able to outperform your male colleagues and get noticed in your career can be challenging, because even today women face prejudices and opposition from others in the workforce. They are often overlooked for promotions for which they are perfectly qualified, and some may assume that they are only working until they get married or get pregnant. They may also assume that women will always be divided between home and family, causing them to be distracted when on the job. You can outperform your male colleagues if you are dedicated to your career and understand how to get noticed on the job.
First ensure that you look and act like a professional at all times. Men wear business suits to the office for a reason; they are professional and neutral and do not call attention to them, so the attention can be on their work. You need to do the same; forego frilly dresses and colors like pink or soft blue. These may be feminine, but they are not professional.
Next, consider how you approach your job. Employers promote those who are professional and dedicated and who bring real value to their position. Be honest with yourself as to how you handle your responsibilities in the office and if you outshine or outperform anyone. If you go in and just do the minimum that is needed and nothing more, this will not get you noticed and it certainly will not get you any type of promotion. To outperform your male colleagues and to get rewarded for your work, you need to go above and beyond the minimum requirements for your job.
Think of how you might take the initiative to bring more value to your employer and do more for your company overall. Can you do additional work on certain projects? Might you create ways to save money for your company? Are there ways to streamline work processes or use fewer resources or find cheaper suppliers and vendors? Do not wait to be asked to find out these things, but create a report or memo or even send an email with solutions you have found. These things will help you to stand out.
Being prepared and skilled at your job can also help you to outperform your male colleagues. When you go into a meeting, be sure you have done all your research about sales figures, new products, or whatever else might come up during that meeting. Asking intelligent questions or being able to answer someone else’s questions can help you to shine in front of your colleagues and managers. When you have presentations, be sure you are prepared well so you can be confident in the material. These things will help you to stand out with your employer and outperform any colleague, male or female.
