Improve Your Job Hunting Success by Using the Internet
Most employers these days will use the internet to advertise jobs and look for candidates. They may post jobs to their own website, post them on job boards, or use recruiters who then search for candidates online. You can greatly improve your odds of finding the best job for yourself if you use the internet properly in your job search.
The first thing to do in order to use the internet properly in your job search is to revise your resume if necessary. Most employers will keep an electronic copy of resumes rather than hard copies, and you do not want decorative items or elements that will interfere with the layout or that take up too much memory. You might want to remove photos and borders and any additional elements to your resume, and save it in a PDF format rather than a typical Word document. This is easier for an employer to read and will ensure the parts of your resume will not shift and move after being emailed.
Next you need to know where and how to search online to be effective. Job boards are the first place to search, including monster.com and Yahoo! Jobs. These sites will list many of the top jobs, and employers pay a fee to post on these sites so you know they are serious about getting someone in to fill their position. These sites are also helpful because they filter and categorize job positions, making your search easier.
As you go through these boards, be sure you fill out your information correctly and do not leave anything blank. Prospective employers will use various fields for a reason, so do not assume you can skip any step or omit information. It may be tedious but this is what is necessary for getting a job interview.
Your next stop would be placement companies that advertise online, and these too may use job boards. You can do a quick local search for placement companies in your area and submit your resume online or call and ask for an interview. Using a placement company is a great timesaver as they may have leads on jobs with companies who only use their services when filling job openings.
When searching online, you also want to look at the websites of various companies in your area to note if they have openings. They may have their own page on their site which lists openings and how to apply. Do a local search for companies that are in the industry that interests you; these may be corporate offices for banks, manufacturing facilities, museums, and so on. Follow their instructions carefully for applying and do not hesitate to follow up after some time to note if they have received your resume, and ask outright for an interview.
