Jog Through the Holidays to Stay Fit and Healthy
Jogging is a great sport for keeping you fit and healthy, and one that you can easily keep up with during the holidays. It will help you to work off those extra pounds you might gain after so may parties, and keep you on track for meeting your New Year’s resolution to lose weight and stay in shape. Jogging doesn’t require any special equipment other than good shoes and comfortable clothes, and you can easily work your way up to longer jogs or outright running in just a few short weeks, if you stick to a plan.
To start jogging throughout the holidays, make it part of your schedule. Decide when you’ll go jogging and for how long and pencil this into your calendar just as you would any other appointment. Go jogging at least four times per week so you actually see results from your workout. If you haven’t been running in some time or have never actually jogged before, you’ll need to take things slow and build up your strength and endurance. Begin with a brisk walk for an hour. Do this for a few weeks, then add a few minutes of jogging during your walk.
Increase the amount of time you spend jogging during each outing. For your first few weeks you may be able to jog for only a minute or two, but don’t let this discourage you from sticking with it. Even those few minutes will benefit you as you’re burning calories and strengthening your heart and lungs. Walk for ten minutes, then jog for a minute or two, then walk again, then jog again, and keep repeating this pattern. Push yourself each time you’re out, and soon enough you’ll be able to jog straight through for half an hour or an hour.
Always stretch before you walk or jog, for at least ten minutes. This stretching should work all the muscles of the legs. Keeping your upper body straight, bend forward and touch your toes, putting your palms flat on the floor if possible. Sit on the floor with your legs spread in front of you and reach for each foot, one at a time, and also stretch straight forward. A good yoga routine will also stretch all your muscles which keeps your legs loose and limber for jogging.
When it’s cold and snowy outside during the holiday season, switch to jogging indoors. If you don’t own a treadmill, join a gym. As with jogging outdoors, you can start by walking briskly for an hour during each visit and then building up your strength and endurance so you can start jogging. This will help to keep you fit and keep from packing on those holiday pounds this season.
