Keeping Up With Musical Legend Madonna
Pop singer Madonna burst onto the scene in the 1980s with the hits ‘Holiday’ and ‘Borderline’ and from there went on to release such 80’s dance and pop classics as ‘Like a Virgin’, ‘Into the Groove’ and ‘Material Girl’, as well as ‘Poppa Don’t Preach’ and ‘Live to Tell’. Since then Madonna has gone on to become one of the world’s most recognized performers and one of the most successful female performers of all time.
Much of Madonna’s music is not just upbeat and ready for dancing; it’s also rebellious and sensual and often controversial. Madonna has said that she’s rebelling against her strict Roman Catholic upbringing, but may also be acting out unresolved issues from her own childhood. Her mother died of breast cancer when she was just 30 and Madonna was only five years old. She sometimes talks about the feelings of loss and insecurity she felt at the time, and the anger she had at her father for moving on without her mother and eventually remarrying.
Madonna’s personal life has also taken center stage over the course of her career. In 1985 she married bad boy actor Sean Penn, and their marriage was marked by controversy right from the start. In 1987 Penn served 33 days in jail for assaulting a photographer, and in 1987 Madonna had to visit the hospital after Penn hit her across the head with a baseball bat. The two divorced in 1989. In 2000 she married film director Guy Ritchie; the couple welcomed a son, Rocco, earlier that year. The two divorced in 2008. Madonna has three children; Rocco, with Ritchie, and a daughter, Lourdes, whom she had with fitness trainer Carlos Leon in 1996. Madonna and Ritchie also adopted a son, David, from Africa in 2008.
She may be known for her lyrics and her vocals, but Madonna is also known for her iconic style that is part of her overall image and which may have helped her to get noticed right from the start. In the 1980s, she had a look that was a cross between Goth and punk and which was uniquely her own. Teased, messy hair along with lots of necklaces and bangle bracelets, mesh shirts over tees and boots with short skirts where her favorite looks. She then went to a softer but sexier style, wearing slip dresses and dying her hair brown. Madonna then started wearing her lingerie as clothing regularly, with corsets and the infamous cone bras part of her standard ensembles. She then began working out, and showed off her fit and toned arms that are the envy of many. Now that she’s in her fifties, Madonna doesn’t seem to be ready to slow down and keeps turning out the hits and touring like she did when she was younger!
