Knee Pain Prevention
As there are many causes of knee pain, there are also several ways to help prevent knee injuries, stress to the joint and pain. Some types of pain are very hard to prevent but here are some generalized suggestions on how to prevent knee pain:
Staying slim can reduce the weight that is placed on the knee and reduce stress on the joint especially when you are doing athletic exercise. Research has shown that the osteoarthritis is reduced with regular exercise. By keeping your weight in check, you will reduce the chance of injuries on ligaments and tendons as well.
Several types of knee problems are a result of imbalances in the musculature. Stretching and strengthening these muscles helps to prevent knee pains. The muscles surrounding the knee are kept from getting too tight if stretching is used to prevent patellofemoral syndrome and iliotibial band syndrome. Stretching the quadriceps is also helpful at preventing knee injury.
Exercise with caution and if you already have had a knee injury, consider doing non weight bearing exercise such as swimming and other forms of water exercises. If you do participate in activities that stress the knee reducing them to a level that is less frequent may still allow you to do them without experiencing knee pain on a constant basis.
Use protective gear on the knees. Wearing knee braces, supports and pads which are appropriate for the activity that you are doing will help to prevent injury. If you have a knee injury already, it may be wise to even wear these supports when you are driving in order to prevent banging your knee on the dashboard.
