Perfect Christmas Gift – A Handmade CD Storage Box
Almost everyone has a music lover on their Christmas gift list and your child may have one too. A unique gift for your child to make is a CD storage box embellished in a creative style. There are many ideas that can be used to decorate the box, and this project gives your child a chance to show off his artistic talent.
A sturdy cardboard box or a small wooden box can be found at a crafts store or home goods store that has the dimensions you need to store CDs. Be sure to write down the measurements when you go to the store so you buy a box that will work well. Even an old shoe box will work as long as it will fit a CD.
Your child may want to decide on a theme for the box. It could be a color scheme to match the person’s room, a musical theme, a particular style like retro, floral, or asian, or even a pop art theme.
One way to decorate the box is with wrapping paper. There are many wrapping papers that are designer quality, and the paper is sturdy too. Find designer gift wrap at specialty paper stores. To cover the box, have him wrap both the bottom and the top and secure with tape.
Fabric can be used to decorate the box. Your child can find dozens of patterns in an array of colors. He can choose from shiny elegant fabrics or homey cotton twill, depending on the effect he wants. Have him work on one panel at a time, cut the fabric to fit, and using a fabric decoupage glue like ModPodge, glue the box first, then glue on top of the fabric to seal.
Have your child use magazine cutouts to make a collage for a contemporary pop art CD storage box. He can find photos of favorite musical artists, events, or words that describe the style of music. Using his imagination, he can make an eye popping collage. ModPodge is again the glue of choice. Use the method described above of glueing the cutout first and then the box itself to seal. He may want to add an additional coat to the whole box after all the photos have been glued, to make a strong finish.
As a way to make the box especially personal, have him cover it with white craft paper and use paints or colored pencils to create his own special design. It may be a scene, a drawing of a favorite pop artist or it could be a mini mural of musical notes and instruments.
Embellishing the box with different items can create a one of a kind treasure. Using items like feathers, shells, buttons, ribbon, glitter, and even wood cutouts. Your child’s imagination can come up with limitless possibilities. Take him to a craft store and let him loose to choose what to work with and you may be amazed at what he picks out. To make the handmade decorated CD storage box complete, have your child add a favorite CD inside the box before wrapping.
