Plan a Crafts Day With Your Kids for Their Winter Break
If your winter break this year brings cold weather and deep snow, you may need some things to do inside with your children. Letting them spend their entire break playing video games or watching television can be a mistake, as this is a good chance to spend time with your children in something you’ll both enjoy. A day of crafts can be a good way for everyone to get involved with indoor activities and to express their creativity before they head back to school and you need to head back to work.
To make a crafts day successful, you want to plan ahead for the items you need, and get some ideas and inspiration rather than assuming your kids will have their own ideas of what to make. You can find ideas online and print off suggestions you see, or get a book of crafts for kids at the supply store.
One easy craft idea you might want to try before the New Year’s holiday is party hats. These are relatively simple and anyone can make them, and you can then wear them for New Year’s Eve. To make a party hat you need to cut a large piece of poster board or construction paper into a circle, and then cut a slit up one side. Pull the ends of this slit together to form a peak, and staple the bottom or glue the two sides. Once the glue is dry you can use a hole punch on two sides of the hat to hold string which goes under your chin and keeps the hat in place.
Party hats can be decorated in any way you like; add an oversized pompom to the top and fur along the edge, or use garland for a colorful touch. You can color it with markers or add stickers or both.
Another great craft idea for kids is creating a diorama. This is like a shadowbox of a particular scene. They can create a winter scene in an old shoebox or other box you have around the house. Use cotton for snow on the ground and create a home with popsicle sticks or scrap pieces of wood. Children can also create trees and other landscape with construction paper and can get creative with other elements they add, such as a pond with a boat or even a Christmas scene by the beach. Let them choose their own scenes to create and again, go online for other creations you might find and use those for inspiration.
