Quick Tips for Packing a Suitcase
If you travel often, you may realize that it can be difficult to pack effectively. You need to keep yourself organized so you don’t forget anything and have everything you need for day and night when on the road, but need to be mindful of how much you bring since most airlines today have weight limits for luggage and charge for extra bags.
Before you pack, first start with a list of everything you need, and that means everything. It helps to walk through your daily routine so you can note all your skincare products as well as toiletries, underwear, shoes, accessories, and so on. Think of what you’ll wear every day including your shoes and jewelry, and write it all down.
Next, look at your list and see if you can pare down anything. Can you use a certain pair of shoes for more than one outfit? If you travel for business, a black pantsuit can be worn one day with a simple tee and then another day, wear the pants and a nice silk blouse for two outfits from just the one suit. Make changes to your planned wardrobe so you pack only the essentials and nothing more. You may only need two pairs of earrings, one for day and one for night, when on vacation or a business trip, so don’t overdo it with anything you pack.
The next step is to purchase a good set of travel totes and containers. Most airlines have limits as to how much liquid you can carry, so buy containers in those amounts so you know you don’t bring too much and get stopped at the gate. Remember that you can always purchase some shampoo or body wash or other items at your destination if you run out.
Large plastic zipper bags are also important when traveling as these will keep your liquids and makeup items from leaking onto your clothes. For added protection, double-bag your items by putting your zipper container in a second zipper container!
Next move on to packing itself. Typically rolling clothes gives you more room than just folding. Put your suits and ensembles together and then roll them up into one piece. Many who travel for business find it helpful to buy canvas shoe bags; you can put your shoes for a certain outfit in this bag and hang it from the hangar so you know you don’t forget anything. If you must have certain pieces of jewelry for a certain outfit, put those pieces in a plastic bag and then punch a hole in the top of the bag; loop this hole over the hangar as well so you have everything for one outfit all together.
Invest in good luggage if you travel often. Forego style for function and choose pieces that have pockets and compartments that allow for added storage. This will help you to pack everything you need in as few bags as possible.
