Quick Tips for Wearing Your Scarf

A good scarf can be a fashion accessory and it can also be a necessity. It can keep your hair in place, protect your skin from the sun, and provide some coverage on your bare shoulders when you’re at the beach. However, knowing how to wear your scarf so that it’s fun and fashionable is the key; you don’t want to look like that photo of your grandmother or like stereotypical peasant women with sad and tired scarves over their heads!
Keeping your scarf loose and thinking of it as a fashion accessory is the first consideration. Women in times past needed to tie down their hair since they didn’t wash and style it every day, so it needed to be protected from the elements. Today’s styles are more carefree and less fussy, so get a long scarf and tie it loosely around your head, allowing the “tails” to drape off to one side.
A loose and unfussy look is also good when you’re wearing your scarf around your neck as an accessory; pull the knot to one side and keep it several inches below your neck. This allows it to billow a bit and doesn’t seem as constrictive. You can go the opposite route and wear your scarf like a choker necklace; keep it tall and flat and pull it from the back, crossing it in front of your neck and then back again, tying it behind you.
You can also wear your scarf as a fashion accessory by tying it around your waist; this works great when you’re in a bathing suit and need a bit of extra coverage, or want to add some color to that plain black dress.
