When it comes to hair removal you tend to have quite a few different options available. Depilatory creams are just one of them and they do tend to be quite popular. This is because they slightly better than shaving and close to the results that you get from waxing only without the pain! So just what is depilatory cream and does it have any disadvantages?
Understanding Depilatory Cream
Depilatory creams basically contain chemicals that are mildly caustic. These include Calcium Thioglycolate and Sodium. What may surprise you is that they were developed in the 1930’s with the intention of removing the hair from the hides of cattle.
The chemicals break down the disulphide bonds within the keratin. This in turn weakens the hair and allows it to be scraped away easily. If you leave the cream on too long then you could experience sensitive and irritated skin.
These types of creams are developed for use on the arms and legs. Some may be suitable for the bikini area. However, they should never really be used on the face.
The Advantages of Depilatory Creams
There are many advantages that come with using these types of creams. Firstly they are quite inexpensive to purchase. You can find them in most local health and beauty stores. The fact that the results last longer than shaving is also another big advantage. This not only leaves you with long lasting results, but it also saves you further money too. You won’t have to buy it as frequently as you would have to change shavers for example.
Depilatory creams are also easy and pain free to use. Unless you leave them on too long, you shouldn’t experience any discomfort. Of course everybody is different and if you have particularly sensitive skin then you may experience redness and a little irritation on the skin for a day or so afterwards.
It takes just a few minutes to remove the hair using this method. You can get different strength creams to ensure that you remove even the toughest hairs. The best way to ensure that you get the best advantages from these creams is to choose a high quality brand.
The Potential Disadvantages
As with all types of hair removal, depilatory creams do have some potential disadvantages. The results will not last a long time. Compared to shaving they do not leave you with stubble straight after you have removed the hair. However, you will still typically experience hair growth again after 2-4 days.
Another disadvantage is that they can be quite messy. You have to apply the cream with your fingers and then removing it is particularly messy.
The above are the only main disadvantages to using the creams. As a form of hair removal, depilatory creams are definitely worth looking into. They provide you with pain free results and they do work better than shaving. The fact that they can easily be used within a few minutes is a particular advantage. Just remember to choose a good brand if you do choose this hair removal method.
