The Advantages of the Female Condom
Using a male condom has many advantages to sexual partners, and today women have a type of condom available that is designed for their use as well. The female condom is a long and thin sheath like a male condom and fits inside the vagina or anus to provide a barrier during intercourse.
There are many advantages to using the female condom, one is that it has no hormones as does the birth control pill, so it has few side effects. The birth control pill has the risk of blood clots and strokes and is linked to certain forms of cancer, but the worst side effect of the female condom may be minor irritation on the skin.
A condom is also the only form of birth control that provides protection against HIV and sexually transmitted diseases. Using the female condom may give the woman more control in protecting herself and her partner against these infections, as well as against unwanted pregnancies.
Female condoms are also easy to obtain and very affordable. You don’t need a prescription to obtain or use the female condom as you do many other forms of birth control, and they’re typically available at any pharmacy and even some supermarkets. If you cannot find them at a store near you, they are also easily found online. Laws may vary regarding age restrictions when it comes to purchasing female condoms, but in most cases they’re available to everyone.
Be sure to practice with your female condom before actual intercourse so you know how to use it, and don’t hesitate to talk to your doctor if you have any questions about any form of birth control.
