The Grownup’s Guide to Glitter
Glitter is a girls best friend, well a little girl, but did you know that if used correctly it could also be a great tool for adults as well. If you properly use glitter in your makeup routine you will be able to highlight your skin, give yourself a fresh new look and even look years younger. However, it must be done correctly. If you overuse the shiny substance you will just leave yourself looking like a fool. Following these simple guidelines will allow you to get a fresh, fun and creative new look.
If you go overboard with glitter on your eyes, you will not only look juvenile, but will likely scare away others. However, applying it correctly can leave your eyes looking bright and inviting. The key to wearing glitter on your eyes is to go light. Go with a glitter liquid liner instead of a shadow. Draw a thin line of the glitter liner from the inner corner to the outer corner of the eyes. Then, take a similar coloured powder eye shadow.
Put a light coat of the shadow over the liner to help lightly camouflage the glitter. It will still show through the powder but will not be overpowering. Another way to let your eyes sparkle is by using a shimmer. Shimmer shadows are slightly glittery, but not overpowering. Use a light shade of shimmer powder eye shadow right along the out brow bone. This will highlight your eyes and makes them stand out.
On the Face
Instead of using the glitter gel that you may have loved in middle school, to add some sparkle to your face you want to use either a gloss or a shimmer. A gloss, which is usually found in cream blush form, will highlight your skin and give it a slight glow. Using your fingers, dab a small amount onto the apples of your cheeks in a circular motion. This will give you a natural glow. When you decide to use a powdered shimmer, you must have a light hand. Brush a small amount on your brow bone, the inner corners of your eye and on the top of the cheek done. It will highlight your face without overdoing it.
On the Lips
Like with the face, if you want to add some shine to your pout, use a gloss based lip colour. Some have a slight shimmer to them that will give your lips a nice glow. Don’t go overboard with the gloss or it could leave with lips that look rather clownish. Instead try a light nude or coral color that has a slight shimmer.
On the Nails
This is the one area where glitter is okay to go crazy with. However, you want to keep it looking professional and clean. Do a french tip using glitter polish instead of the normal white colour. Or, give yourself a deep coloured polish and top it off with some glitter top coat for a fun, yet subtle, style. Be sure to use tone on tone glitter polish. Gold polish with gold glitter, silver polish with silver glitter etc. If you opt for the white or clear polish with coloured glitter it will look juvenile and tacky.
