Time Restraints of Mirena
One of the main questions that you may have is how soon Mirena becomes effective after it has been inserted. If you don’t wait the required amount of time then that can cause a lot of potential problems. If you are unprotected and you have sex and fall pregnant, your health will be at risk.
The Mirena will stop an egg from developing in the womb. However, it will not stop the egg developing in the tubes. So you will be at risk of an ectopic pregnancy.
How Quickly Does it Take Effect?
The good news is that Mirena is usually fitted within the first 7 days of your period. Therefore it is effective immediately. You may be sore however so it is recommended to leave it at least 24 hours before you have sex. You will likely need painkillers and suffer cramps for a few days after the procedure.
If you have the Mirena fitted after these first 7 days, you will need to wear extra protection for 7 days.
Providing the device doesn’t move, you should be protected for up to 5 years. You can choose to have it removed at any time if you choose to start trying for a baby. However, it can safely be used for up to 5 years if you wish.
So if you are looking for a form of contraception that is long lasting, that you don’t need to remember and that protects you from day 1, Mirena may just be right for you.
