Tips for Making Oversized Shoes Fit
When you have a pair of shoes that you absolutely love but which are just too large, what to do? Before you decide you can’t wear them, consider a few simple tips for making them fit much better.
Socks obviously make larger shoes fit better, but you may assume you can’t wear socks with nice heels. Many models today have been spotted with ankle socks with their best pumps and this can actually be a fun touch for your ensemble. Thick tights can also make those shoes fit more snugly, so try some of those even in the warmer months. Fun, colorful tights can also add personality to your wardrobe no matter your outfit.
Often when shoes are too big, your feet slide around inside them. There are pieces of material you can purchase that are meant for the bottom of your soles to give you traction on slippery surfaces. They have adhesive on one side and are rough on the other side; while these are meant for the bottom of your soles, you can place them inside your shoes to keep your feet in place.
Shoes that are too big and which have soft leather also encourage your feet to slide around. Try putting your shoes in the freezer to stiffen the leather so they fit your feet more firmly. Be sure you take them out after a few hours so that frost doesn’t build up and you ruin the leather or suede. You may need to refreeze them after a few weeks when the leather starts to get soft again.
Making your feet wider can also help to make oversized shoes fit better, if they’re too large at the sides. Try wrapping some rubber bands around your feet as this will make them larger and also provide you with traction. Stuffing cotton into your shoes on the side may not work well since cotton tends to move around, so try some clean makeup wedges or sponges. These will stay in place much better.
You can also put these materials in the front of your shoes if they’re too long. Your feet won’t slide forward so you’re more comfortable and even safer. You might also wrap some adhesive bandages around the backs of your ankles to give your feet more length and make those shoes fit better.
You may also want to take your shoes to a professional shoe repairperson and ask if they have solutions for making them smaller. They may have certain materials that go inside the shoe to make them more snug or may be able to pull the materials inward to make them more snug. They can also offer suggestions for making them safer for you when they’re too big.
