Try Aqua Aerobics This Winter to Stay in Shape
Aqua or water aerobics refers to an aerobics class that is conducted in a pool. Like any other aerobics class you have an instructor who walks you through your exercises and classes may be offered at a beginner, intermediate, and advanced level. Aqua or water aerobics is performed in water that is no deeper than your waist or chest. It’s fun and challenging and a great way to stay in shape this winter.
One reason that aqua aerobics is so challenging is that you have the resistance or drag of the water to work against during your class. This means you need to exert extra effort to follow along. Think of how difficult it is to walk when in water and you’ll understand why such a class is so challenging. You’re working your muscles harder and are also training your heart and lungs more effectively with an aqua aerobics class.
Not only are you working harder when you’re in an aqua aerobics class, you also have little to no impact on your joints. The water acts as a natural cushion or shock absorber for your movements because of its resistance. Anyone with bad knees or bad hips or a sore back will attest to how difficult it can be to join a regular aerobics class because of this constant pounding on your joints, and using an elliptical machine is effective but can also get boring and repetitive. With an aqua or water aerobics class, you never get bored and never have this wear and tear on your joints.
It can be fun to try an aqua aerobics class during winter because it gets you out of the house and allows you to work out in a safe environment. You may not be able to go running during winter because of snowfall and may despise working out in a stuffy and sweaty gym, so water aerobics can be a good change of pace. An aerobics class is always different every time you attend so you’re less likely to get bored, and the challenge of a water aerobics class can make it even more interesting for you.
Check with your local gym if it has a pool and ask about water aerobics classes. If they don’t offer them, suggest that they start. You can also check your local community center or even your high school, if these have pools. Many of these places offer water aerobics after hours in order to make money and this can be a fun way to get out of the house during the winter season. It can also keep you in shape so you’re ready for bikini season once it’s time to hit the outdoor pools next year!
