Watch ‘Bambi’ Again for the First Time
The animated film ‘Bambi,’ first released in 1942, is considered an American classic. It has been rereleased in restored color in 2011, so that families can once again enjoy this tale for the first time. If you have not seen the entire movie or your children have not seen it, why not consider it this winter?
The story of Bambi, a white-tailed deer, begins with his birth in the forest. Bambi’s father is the Great Prince of the Forest, and his best friends include a rabbit named Thumper and a skunk named Flower. Bambi spends most of his time with his mother, exploring the forest and growing into a young buck, until his mother is tragically shot and killed by hunters. Bambi then eventually finds love with a deer named Faline, but is challenged by another buck called Ronno. Bambi is able to conquer Ronno in a battle and gain the affections of Faline. Soon he and his father need to get all the animals out of the woods and to a riverbank as campers have carelessly left a fire burning, and Bambi fears Faline is lost to him forever. The two are happily reunited however and she soon gives birth to twins as Bambi takes his place as the new Great Prince of the Forest.
The movie is known for being bittersweet, with the scene of Bambi’s mother being shot and killed considered one of the most tragic ever created for a child’s movie. It can also be somewhat frightening as Bambi needs to fight another buck and the animals are trapped by the smoke from the fire. Some very young children may find the movie too intense, but most in the family will love the story of a young prince who finally takes his place in the forest.
It may surprise you to know that when the movie was first released, it was panned by critics and huntsmen alike. They felt it was too graphic and that it did not have the Disney charm seen in previous movies. However, after being rereleased over the years, critics expressed their appreciation for the film and many today consider it a classic. It often appears on many ‘best of’ and ‘top 10′ lists for iconic U.S. films, and is often thought of as a must-see for families.
If you or your children have not seen ‘Bambi,’ consider picking up a new copy today. You may be looking for something new to share with your children during the long winter months when you want to curl up in front of a fire and watch a movie together, and sometimes turning to old classics is the best choice.
