Xmas with Young Kids
Xmas is supposed to be all about family. This is a holiday when families come together from around the country. Some of us experience a Xmas that is snowy and others a Xmas that is warm. Wherever we may find ourselves, there’s no getting away from the fact that this holiday must revolve around the kids.
Families with very young kids should take into account they have a different experience to older kids. Very young kids may find a holiday like Xmas to be overwhelming.
It’s traditional for parents to make Xmas day the climax of a huge build up of excitement over a few weeks. Adults and older kids love the build up. However, very young kids probably don’t have the necessary skills to cope with such a high level of excitement.
Young kids need to be taught about Xmas traditions in a calm manner. Talk to the kids about a particular tradition like hanging decorations. Your tone of voice and your own excitement will heighten your kids’ emotions to a point where they can’t cope. Remember, they are very young and haven’t developed that level of emotional maturity.
Don’t keep reminding them about the presents they will be getting. Very young kids don’t have a concept of time. It may also be very hard for them to understand why they have to wait. Again, this is all about their level of development and not about being difficult.
The good news is that your kids will grow each year and be able to cope with more and more excitement. They will reach an age where they understand all the traditions and look forward to celebrating them.
The secret to a happy Xmas for young kids is to keep things simple and calm. Xmas has many colorful, intriguing and exciting traditions that could be overpowering to kids if experienced too quickly and too intensely.
