Your Boyfriend Is Meeting Your Parents For The First Time
You and your boyfriend are at that point in your relationship when it is time for him to meet your parents. It is bound to be a bit nerve wracking for him, no matter how relaxed and easy going you think your parents are. He will be nervous about doing and saying the right thing, and only wants to make a good impression. Help him make the experience a good one by following these suggestions.
Prepare The Boyfriend
Give your boyfriend all the facts about your parents, like what they do for a living, their hobbies, what the two of them like to do together, and what their personalities are like. If they have any interests that he has too, for instance if your father likes to go biking and your boyfriend does too, point that out to him so they have a common interest to talk about. Also prepare him about your parents’ stand on politics and religion. It is best to stay away from these topics, but if your parents bring one of them up, your boyfriend can step around the landmine and answer the best way while also maintaining respect, even if they disagree.
Prepare The Parents
Tell your parents everything about your boyfriend, filling in the blanks if you have already told them some stuff. Give them ideas about what he likes to talk about so they can avoid any awkwardness. Stress all his good points and what makes him a great guy. Explain to your parents that no matter how much he may act at ease, he will be nervous and trying to show his best side to them, so if they can be welcoming and warm, it will make everything easier.
Choose The Venue
Depending on your boyfriend’s personality, you may want to choose a family gathering where he will be socializing with many people, not just your parents. That way, he will be able to show more of his personality, but not be under the microscope with your mom and dad. The best way to all meet is by either your parents hosting a dinner at their home or you all going out. Meeting just your parents has benefits as well. Your boyfriend only has to worry about two people and can talk to them for a longer period.
Manners And Appearance
It should go without saying that your boyfriend should be on his best behavior and use good manners. If your parents chose a fancy restaurant to go to, make sure he is up on all the etiquette rules about table settings. If dinner is at their home, ask your boyfriend to help clean up after dinner, and offer any assistance needed. Good manners score big with parents. Remind him to dress appropriate for the place, no jeans or tee shirt, and be well groomed. Appearance and manners are the two big things people take stock of when judging character.
Most of all, tell your boyfriend to just be himself and try to relax. Soon meeting up with the parents will become less to stress about.
